SCP Foundation Themed Birthday Party

For every one of my son’s birthdays, we’ve always had a fun party theme, but as he gets older, finding ones he thinks are “cool” are getting harder and harder. For his 12th birthday, he requested a SCP Foundation theme, so I searched Pinterest and found close to nothing. And then, I found myself asking, “What the hell is the SCP Foundation?”

What is the SCP Foundation?

The SCP Foundation is sooort of like The Ghostbusters meets The Men in Black meets Resident Evil meets a fever dream. It’s a foundation made up of researchers who find various anomalous entities. The types of entities are endless, as fans can submit their own. You can learn about it more in-depth by visiting Wikipedia.

After finding a badass SCP-themed cake I saw on Pinterest, I decided on a simple black and white theme (the foundation’s logo colors), and went on to Google. There, I found some really cool party favors on Etsy that looked like vials of medicine. I picked my son’s brain and learned what I could from the internets, and the wheels in my head started turning.

SCP Foundation Party Ideas

These awesome looking specimens from Raven Laboratories on Etsy made me think of those gel squeeze candies, so I ordered some on Amazon that look like syringes, and made some sticker labels in Canva using the Etsy pictures as inspiration. These ended up being the hit of the party!

Here are what they turned out like, and the label I created.

It may be hard to read, but I was pretty proud of myself for adding a little SCP humor with the warning at the bottom to “keep out of reach of SCP-053’s” which is a funny way to say keep out of reach of children.

But, wait, what are those other labels for, you might ask? Well, I decided the party guests needed more sugar, so I also purchased some Warheads sour spray candy, and make labels for those as well. The candy I bought from Amazon came in a variety pack with three of three different flavors.

I also bought these cool metal serving trays that looked very dentist office to me, which is where I’m sure all the kids were headed after the amount of candy they consumed at the party.

SCP Foundation Party Invitation

While looking at all things SCP Foundation related on the internet, I came across some really cool fan art, and I totally used it (sorry!) and added a “Top Secret” image in Canva. All of the SCP Foundation entities have cool profiles, and I thought it would be cool to make the actual birthday a SCP. I added some blacked-out areas to make it look like there was highly classified information being redacted.

I hate to admit it, because as a writer, I am adverse to Chat GPT for several reasons, but it actually came in handy in helping me create the copy for this invite.

I made a tablecloth that I painted some SCP Foundation symbols on using black fabric paint using this as a guide, and I wasn’t thrilled with how it turned out but it was something.

I purchased some really cool looking black and white marbled balloons, bought some red “danger” caution tape to use as garland but didn’t end up having enough time to hang up, and that was pretty much it as far as SCP Foundation party decor went.

SCP Foundation Ice Cream Cake

Using a picture I found on Pinterest as the inspiration, I tried to figure out how I, a very non-professional cake maker, could not spend hundreds of dollars by having a cake made. A few years ago, my son requested an ice cream cake for his birthday, and I made one using a very simple recipe and tutorial I found on YouTube by All Recipes, and it turned out looking amazing, and everyone was raving over how great it tasted, too. I used red velvet boxed cake mix, vanilla ice cream, Smuckers magic shell, and Oreos to make the cake, heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar to make a simple but super tasty frosting, then ended up using some ready-made white whipped frosting to decorate the base and edges of the cake with, some black and white sprinkles, and some black cookie frosting to make drips down the sides. I bought edible frosting sheets from Amazon which were kind of pricey seeing as I only needed one, as well as some edible food coloring markers. I printed out the SCP Foundation logo to a size that would fit the top of an eight inch cake, and the sugar paper was transparent enough for me to be able to put the printable underneath and use it to trace.

It may not have been the jaw-dropping party decor with dramatic balloon garlands galore we see on Pinterest, but I think I did well without much inspo. While I was searching for party ideas, I came aross a Reddit thread where users were asking what one would do for a SCP Foundation themed birthday, so I hope this helps any future parents trying to figure out wtf to do for a SCP birthday!
